During a typical assessment that I have with a future client or when I am speaking to random people on how they can lose the extra fat around their gut, I generally ask them “How many times per day do you eat?” Normally these same individuals will reply by stating they only eat twice per day which compels me to follow up with the question, “Which meal do you skip?” I already know the answer to my final question because people normally skip breakfast due to being “so swamped with their busy schedules”.
Well, I’m here to tell you like I tell everyone else what’s going on with skipping breakfast (or any meal for that matter). Our bodies are like an enigma, or carry characteristics opposite from one another. On one hand your body and its functions are extemely advanced beyond your capacity to understand, for the main purpose of survival in normal and adverse conditions. On the other hand, there is little correlation between your judgement and your body’s response to its environment. Basically, you may skip a meal because of your hectic schedule or because you think it is the thing to do for weight loss. But In fact, what’s going on is that you and your body aren’t on the same page.

Ok, the average Jack or Shanikwa sleeps 7 hours per day and wakes up around 7:00 am to get the kids ready for school as well as herself prepared for the 9 – 5 right? Well, let’s say dinner the night before is served and eaten around 7′ish and you haven’t fed yourself since then and persist to wait until your 30-minute lunch break at 12 o’clock because you don’t have time and/or could drop the extra pounds. That’s 17 hours of NOT eating! Are you still following me? Here it is; YOU may have a plan that you think is a logical solution to the madness but your body is thinking in terms of how it was programmed to survive.
Adaptation to one’s survival is king and your body does not recognize your environmental conditions but wonders if you are going through a famine. That’s right; Just like you may find it to be an urgency to save and stack up on money when you find yourself short on cash is the same thing your body does when you starve it from food. You’re body is constantly going through a process called homeostasis, where it is constantly performing balancing-acts to keep you in the best shape possible, considering the environmental circumstances it is left to deal with. For example, if you have eaten too much sugar, your pancreas will panic and let off insulin, to quickly rush the sugar from your blood-stream to your liver to convert it as fat in your lipid cells for the sake of decreasing high concentrations of sugar in your blood, which is detremental to you. But, keep putting your body through this craze, and you are left with diabetes because your pancreas is no longer releasing insulin to maintain your sugar levels.
Not eating for long periods of time does not help you to lose weight, but in fact does the opposite. Your advanced body is not smart enough to understand that you are too busy or are trying to drop the pounds for that sexy bikini, but does what it has been programmed to do since the cave-man times: SURVIVE TO LIVE ANOTHER DAY..
To make a long story short; despite what may be going on with you as far as your inconsistent eating patterns are concerened, your body goes back to the old-school, “throw-back” or relic days of survival and thinks that you are going through another starvation period. In response, it saves the food you’ve already stored, as fat, for the only purposes of giving you energy and the ability to not perish away. Muscle is an inconvenience so your body eats that and saves fat. Thus, this is what you get:

Flabby Dude
For the sake of not losing your attention and me going to bed before 2am, please eat on a regular basis. You will “trick” your body into believing that everything is cool and it will be free to let go of the fat, used for energy, since you are placing rich nutrients in your body. It will be more adapt to releasing the FAT. Thats what you want. That’s how Phelps’ (with his 8000 calories per day) munchies keep him lean and how you can make it happen as well no matter what your fitness goals are.
